EUROCUP 2021/22 TEAMS ADVANCED STATS RECAP

EUROCUP TEAMS ADVANCED STATS RECAP
After 5 rounds of Eurocup we made a quick recap of the teams' advanced stats.

OFFENSIVE RATING AND DEFENSIVE RATING:
Offensive Rating= Points scored per 100 possessions.
Defensive Rating= Points allowed per 100 possessions. The best teams are located in the upper right corner ( above average in offense and defense). On the opposite, worst teams are located in the bottom left corner ( below average in offense and defense).

Badalona is the best defense of the league with 92.9 points allowed per 100 possessions. Moreover, the Spanish team is also an above average offense and this is why they are leading Group A tied, with Partizan (2nd best defense) and Kuban (2nd best offense). Valencia has the best offensive rating with 125.1 pts scored per 100 possessions, but it is the second worst defense, and this is what they need to improve if they want to come back compiting in the EuroLeague.

REBOUNDING
Andorra is the best defensive rebounding team, while Valencia is the best offensive rebounding team. Lietkabelis, Bursaspor, Ulm, Bourg, Levallois and Valencia are teams above average in both departments. Venezia and Bologna are struggling to grab both offensive and defensive rebounds.

PLAYMAKING
How a team manages the ball is one of the most important aspects of the game.
Having a high assists/turnovers ratio means that a team is good in genereting shots without loosing too many balls in their possessions. A high assist turnover ratio is highly correlated with having a talented or experienced group of backcourt players.

Hamburg is the best team followed by Badalona and Bologna. Venezia and Trento are the worst Eurocup teams in AST/TO , respectively with 19th and 20th rank.

3POINTS SHOOTING

A higher 3 point attempt rate denotes a team that likes to shoot from the deep.
The best team in terms of 3pt% is Cedevita, with 41.2% that is also above the average in the three point attempt rate. The Slovenian team combines shooting volume and efficiency with 6 shooters, with more than the 40% from the deep. Other teams in the upper right corner that combine efficiency and volume from distance are Patras, Turk Telekom, and Valencia.

FREE THROWS
The ability to go to the charity stripe is another important aspect of the game. In this scatter plot we analyze the teams' ability to go to the free throw line and to turn this opportunity in points.

Valencia, Badalona, Partizan, Kuban, Ulm, Buducnost, Lietkabelis and Bologna are the best teams in terms of going to the free throw line and converting free throws. Most of the teams in the upper right corner are teams with positive records. Trento has the worst FT% of the Eurocup.

PACE (GAME RITHYM)

Bologna is the fastest team of the competition followed by Hamburg and Kuban.

Net rating: points differential per 100 possessions (Offensive Rating - Defensive Rating). Hence a positive Net rating denotes a good team. The interesting part of this graph is the grey line that represents the trend. It reports a negative value cor=-0.12), which means that an higher number of possessions is correlated with a lower NET rating. Therefore. in Eurocup 2021/22 slower teams tend to perform better, even if the correlation is not so strong; there are teams such as Bologna and Kuban that play fast and are highly effective.

DEFENSIVE STATS

Ideal situation in the bubble plot: -team should be in the upper right corner (above average in blocks and steals), with a big circle (above average in defensive rebounding team) and the bubble should be blue, which indicates a low defensive rating (solid defense). Teams that are close to meet these criteria are Gran Canaria, Partizan, Badalona (best defense in terms of defensive rating), Venezia and Bologna.
